Eric A Castillo, Male, Age 36
Reports of gunshots, and sightings of a male with a “possible gunshot wound to the stomach” were reported by DRPD late on Thursday night May 7. Records indicate the suspect fled the scene, “headed towards O’Reilly’s.” Approximately 4 hours after the shooting, around 1:50AM on May 8, Castillo was detained and charged with two accounts of Felony 2 assault: Aggravated Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury & Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. These charges could result in a prison sentence from 2 to 20 years approximately. Castillo was found fleeing the city at the US Border Patrol Uvalde Checkpoint, because a BOLO (be on the look-out) bulletin had been shared with the agency.
The day following the incident, DRPD published a press release, alerting the community that the gunman had been found, and was no longer a threat to the community. The press release stated: “Upon arrival police located an adult male with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Police sealed the wound and waited for Emergency Medical Services to arrive... Police located the crime scene in the 800 block of East 11th Street where damaged vehicle parts and shell casings were found. Police recovered surveillance footage from the area depicting a suspect's vehicle… A follow-up investigation revealed the suspect's vehicle was being driven by a relative of the owner.”
DRPD also shared an update on the victim on 5/8: “Currently the victim remains in stable condition.”

5/8/25 7:00PM (Thursday)
Rafael Gilberto Barboza-Rendon, Male, Age 23
With an outstanding warrant out for his arrest, with an active charge of “Human Smuggling and Evading Arrest,” Barboza-Rendon boldly crossed into Mexico and then attempted to cross back into the United States. Agents at the border flagged his profile. DRPD was dispatched to the Del Rio Port of Entry and took Barboza-Rendon into custody. DRPD incident report says, “the male was later remanded to the Val Verde County Processing Center.”

Alejandro Castillo, Male, Age 29
Two private residence fences were destroyed/damaged near Avenue B and N. Main, by a hit-and-run reported on May 11. A large corner of chain link fence was ripped down, and across the street, a tall concrete fence was broken and cracked. Evidence at the scene suggests the driver took a wide fast turn, caught the edge of one fence, spun out, and then came to a stop upon impact with the other fence. No toxicology was included in the report, indicating the driver was not drunk at the time of arrest.
The DRPD incident report states: “Vehicle parts were left near one of the fences. Officers patrolling the area observed a vehicle similar in color with damage pertaining to vehicle part from scene. Officer observed male subject outside the residence who previously broke door and ran inside.” The report suggests that after the hit-and-run, the suspect also committed a break-and-enter in attempts to resist arrest. The crime was first reported at 11:45PM and Castillo was in custody by 12:20AM. Castillo was charged with 2 misdemeanors for hit-and-run called “Duty on Striking Fixture,” as well as misdemeanors for evading and resisting arrest.

In an unrelated event, the chain-link fence/gate at the new Val Verde County Annex Pct. 2 Building and Library property off East Chapoy Street was also run down. Occurring on the other side of town, it likely was not Castillo who caused the damage. However, the coincidence of 2 similar events occurring around the same time is notable. Del Rio residents should exercise caution near residential roadway intersections. There have been a series of reckless driving incidents that resulted in private property damage, luckily no reports of personal injuries were associated with these 2 hit-and-runs.

At Connect Del Rio, our commitment is to report on the events that genuinely shape and affect our community. We announce the return of the Blotter, with a renewed focus on significant crimes—those that have the greatest impact on public safety and well-being. This updated approach seeks to highlight major, high-profile incidents, with the intention of informing the public, fostering accountability, and ultimately contributing to a safer community for all. Through clear, fact-based reporting, we hope to encourage constructive dialogue and a deeper understanding of the realities facing Del Rio.
