"Spring Adoptathon" Brings Furry Friends and Families Together in Del Rio
This past Saturday, April 27th, 2024, hearts were warmed and tails were wagging at the Los Olivos Plaza. The "Spring Adoptathon," an event hosted by Del Rio's Petsense, transformed the space into an event that promoted adoption for dogs and cats.
"So at these events, we usually do about ten adoptions, the majority of them are kittens. This time as of right now today's event, we have four adoptions so far. Were hoping for a couple more before the end of the day..." Virginia McGillicuddy shares. McGillicuddy is the Petsense Store Manager and has been for 3 years. "We do these events to help clear the shelter and rescues locally here in Del Rio..." The event is recurring and at each event, different organizations are invited to bring their animals to present to the community for adoption. Here at the Spring Adoptathon the City of Del Rio's, Animal Control was brought in to help clear their shelter and give their animals a new home.
Alletse Hernandez, the City of Del Rio's Animal Control Department Supervisor explains, "We try to find the animals' homes and try to get them out of here so they can have new lives and new owners." Many families were at the event, the children: full of smiles over the friendly and adorable animals, some even adopted right there on the spot. "My most recommended advice to the community of Del Rio is to always have your pets spayed and neutered I think that often goes underseen by a lot of the community... It solves a lot more problems than you think..." Hernandez goes on to explain how it prevents unwanted litter and gives your dogs a stress-free environment.
Although our furry friends were the center of attention, you couldn't avoid our great local vendors. It was relaxing and refreshing to walk around the event and visit with each of the vendors. Lots of smiles and Del Rioans enjoying a hot but eventful sunny day! We look forward to attending their next event, come fall!
