Laughlin Air Force Base is actively trying to connect with local small businesses and wants them to bid on more projects. They're even hosting a free training event on Wednesday morning, May 21, 2025, called "Industry Day," to teach people how to become government contractors. Laughlin AFB awards between $35 and $45 million in contracts each fiscal year, with individual bid solicitations ranging from small purchases to multi-million-dollar projects.
Director of Business Operations, Jesus Perez, is organizing the event. LAFB is opening its gates to civilian entrepreneurs and service providers, at no cost to them. He designed the program as part of their push to work more with the locals. Perez said, his goal is to “attract more local businesses” for contract opportunities. LAFB recognizes that local businesses might be hesitant to apply due to a lack of knowledge about the process or thinking they don't meet the requirements. This event is specifically designed to address those concerns and show locals that they can participate. Perez says you can learn “how to meet some of the requirements,” write winning “Performance Work Statements (PWS),” and more.

Project opportunities aren't just for big construction companies. There is a range of projects and service requests. Perez said, “bid requests range from $100 small purchases to $5 million dollar contracts.” Postings include everything from water softener installation and carpet replacement to complete building renovations, and even unique requests like the active listing for Catholic Religious Education Coordinator to work at the chapel.
There are some projects that military personnel are not allowed to complete themselves, that must be contracted out with civilian companies. Usually, the bids are open for one month. Best to get your paperwork squared away in advance, so when opportunities arise that match your business, you’re ready. If you're a small business owner in the Del Rio area, this seems like a fantastic opportunity to explore potential growth and revenue streams. Recirculating LAFB’s federal funding back into Del Rio, rather than paying it out to companies from out of town, would benefit the city’s economy greatly. Laughlin is encouraging Del Rio businesses to bid, giving us the chance to keep those dollars local!

Opportunities are trending up. In the next few years, LAFB project availability may surpass the $40 million annual average. The T-7 Red Hawk aircraft is expected to arrive at Laughlin Air Force Base in about 5 years, in 2030. Transitioning the base to accommodate a new plane will require significant infrastructure upgrades, including new facilities for training, operations, and maintenance.

The 47th Contracting Squadron is hosting “Industry Day” at XL Landings Building 472. Their flyer read: “Join us for an excellent chance to explore how to do business with the government, learn about upcoming opportunities, and more!!” Base access for the day will be provided. Pre-registration required and registration is closing soon. Contact Jesus Perez to register, or for more information: 830-298-5641 <Jesus.perez.3@us.af.mil>.
