Following the passage of an updated ordinance on vehicle parking on city streets and addressing issues regarding the blockage of driveways and sightways of incoming traffic, the City of Del Rio has released a reminder and some guidelines for this change ahead of its effective date, January 1, 2025.

“Soft enforcement” of this ordinance will begin from January 1 - February 1, 2025 in order to give citizens and landowners the opportunity to prepare and educate themselves on the new guidelines before stricter enforcement and citations are issued. The city will be issuing reminders, education materials, and warnings to all homeowners within the City of Del Rio at the beginning of the year.

“I would like to just let you know that we are pushing out a website, or a link, a QR code, for anyone to access the do’s and don’ts of the parking ordinance that is taking effect January 1st,” City Manager, Shawna Burkhart stated during her informational update at the December 17th City Council Meeting. “We will be also sending that out via mail to all our utility customers, we have a website set up so that anyone can go to our city website and look at the do’s and don’ts, we will actually not be rolling out any fines until February 1st to give everyone 30 days to read up on this and become very well versed on it.”

“We’re trying to inform all of the public about the parking ordinance ahead of time so that there is no confusion,” Burkhart concluded.

The ordinance includes updated regulations such as:

– No Parking Near Intersections and keep at least 20 feet away (recreational vehicles included)

– Blocking Sidewalks Is Prohibited

– Abandoned Vehicles – No parking for more than 48 hours without moving your vehicle unless you have express permission from homeowners (applies to recreational and junk vehicles as well)

– Handicapped Spaces Are Reserved - ensure permits are visible when using handicapped parking spaces

– Oversized Vehicle Parking – No vehicles over 8ft in width or 9ft in height are allowed to park on public streets without a permit.
