Head-On Collision Sends Chevy Through Elementary School Fence on N. Bedell Ave This Morning

Earlier this morning at approximately 10:15am on Saturday 3/1/25, a major collision occurred on N. Bedell Ave. Two cars were involved, a shiny brand-new red Mustang and a black Chevy compact SUV. Both vehicles had severe damage to the front, suggesting that they were traveling in opposite directions before one vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and caused a head-on collision.
The entire front end of the Mustang was compacted. The Mustang came to a hard stop on the street, facing south. The Chevy had its entire front left wheel and axel ripped out from under its carriage. The impact appeared to have launched the Chevy up and over the curb, through a yield sign, and then chain-link fence. It narrowly missed a row of oak trees before coming to a stop several yards into the old Irene C. Cardwell Elementary School playground property.

Those injured were rushed across the street to Val Verde Regional Medical Center. At least 2 were taken away in ambulances. Upon arrival to the scene, one man was down on the ground, lying next to the Mustang. He was treated with a neck brace and taken to the hospital first. It is unknown if any fatalities occurred.
Police, Fire, and EMS responded to the scene immediately. At least 7 police vehicles arrived to assist. The southbound lane on N. Bedell was completely blocked off for more than one hour. The crash site was in close proximity to both the Val Verde Hospital and Del Rio Police Station, a small blessing for such a dangerous crash, enabling first responders to get to the scene quickly.
Firefighters sprayed pink flame retardant to smother liquids that were streaming out from under the Mustang as it was being hauled away by a tow truck. Yellow and pink vested crew members cleaned up debris and cleared the road quickly while EMTs were still on scene. All teams worked simultaneously to restore the flow of traffic and deliver emergency aid.

A local car dealership representative arrived at the scene after the ambulances and tow trucks had left. The representative spoke with the Police Sergeant about one of the vehicles involved, a vehicle that allegedly was being taken on a test drive from the dealership at that time.
Both cars are totaled. Connect Del Rio is waiting for more information from the Del Rio Police Seargent, the accident is still under investigation. Out of respect for the families involved, certain photos and details have been excluded from this report until more information has been released by officials.
