On January 25, 2025 powerlifting students competed at the Del Rio Powerlifting meet at Del Rio Middle School. The invitational was a resounding success as every competing school demonstrated their outstanding display of strength, discipline, and tenacity. “There’s a lot of companionship… They support each other, because they all know they’re going to go to the next level,” said David Gomez, Head Powerlifting Coach at Del Rio High School.

While each school brought their best, Del Rio competitors were confident in their performance with Del Rio students securing multiple awards solidifying themselves as fierce competitors.

“Obviously to win, I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season,” answered athlete Kailyn Lomas when asked what her expectations for the event were. “I’m more focused on my form, trying to make sure I have everything put together to get the best lifts I can,” answered Chloe Juarez when asked the difference between previous events and the current event.

In addition to securing multiple spots on the podium, several athletes achieved regional qualifying totals allowing them to advance to the next level and marking significant milestones in their seasons.

Among the day’s most memorable moments was an outstanding performance by George Avalos, who delivered an impressive display of strength setting two new school records, achieving a 775 lb squat and a notable 1,800 lb total, cementing himself in the school’s powerlifting history. “I expected to come in and have decent totals… I ended up overcoming any setbacks I had,” said George Avalos.

While competing at the Uvalde Strong Invitational Powerlifting Meet this past Saturday, February 8, 2025, several lifters continued to place high and achieve record totals, including Girls Varsity lifter Kailyn Lomas, who placed first in the state 97 lb class, 765 lb total, and hit a Regional Qualifying Total.

Our Del Rio athletes excelled across all divisions, earning numerous awards and surpassing their limits through strength, determination, and perseverance. Congratulations to all athletes for their outstanding performances and achievements.
