Del Rio becomes the latest city to hold a protest against the current administration’s Immigration policies which include proposed mass deportations and ICE raids across the country. Protestors gathered at the Del Rio Civic Center on Saturday, February 8, 2025, holding signs, waving flags and chanting towards the passing cars on busy Veterans Blvd.

Multiple protests and walkouts have already taken place in major cities across the country including Los Angeles where protestors shut down the busy 101 freeway and multiple students have staged school walkouts in protest of the growing ICE presence in their community. Similar protests have also broken out in cities across Texas including Houston and fellow border town McAllen, Texas, and continue to grow across all 50 states of the US.

Here in Del Rio, organizer Valerie Rodriguez shared on social media that this protest was being held because: “Taking a stance against ICE raids and the fear instilled in Mexican and Latino communities is incredibly important.” “These raids cause widespread fear and uncertainty, tearing apart families and communities.”

Local artist and activist, Xochitl Abrego, joined the protest on February 8, 2025.

Sergio Lopez, of the Border Network for Human Rights, told us, “Many rights are being violated, I mean pick a cause, we have the LGBTQ+ community here, we have many Hispanics, we have many people defending, most importantly, human rights,” Lopez began. “That is our number one priority, to defend human rights regardless of your color, of your race, of your religion, if you are in this great country, the United States of America, the constitution of this great country defends your human rights, and that is what we are here to remind you, that your human rights will be defended and we are here, specifically the Border Network for Human Rights, and other organizations, are here reminding people that their rights are to be defended and we are here to defend them.”

Lopez also shared that the Border Network for Human Rights will be holding a rally in the state capitol soon, “We have a major rally coming up on March 22 and it will be in the capitol building in Austin, TX, we have everything reserved, we have everything taken care of already, we will even have a bus that is going to take anybody who wants to go from Del Rio to Austin and back, everyone is welcome to join us, they can reach me on my social media, Sergio Lopez Santillan on Facebook and Instagram as well as at my office at 716 W.
