LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --  At about 9 a.m. CST on April 16, 2024, Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office notified Laughlin Air Force Base security forces that a body was found dead near a railway off base. The deceased is identified as an active-duty Airman stationed at Laughlin Air Force Base.  


“We tragically lost a member of our Air Force and Laughlin family,” said Col Kevin A. Davidson, 47th Flying Training Wing commander. “Our hearts and prayers are with the family and all those that knew him. Our top priority is to support the grieving family, friends, and loved ones struggling with this loss.”


The name of the deceased will be withheld until 24 hours following notification of the member’s next of kin. The cause of death is under investigation by the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office.

A 47th Flying Training Wing Airman found dead off base near the railway in Del Rio, Texas on Tuesday, April 16, is identified as 2d Lt. James Chitika.


Chitika was a student pilot assigned to the 47th Student Squadron.


“Our deepest condolences are with the Chitika family, classmates, and friends of James during this difficult time,” said Col Kevin Davidson, 47th Flying Training Wing commander. “As we work through this tragedy, let’s focus on uplifting one another.”


Chitika is a 24-year-old native from Atlanta, Georgia and is survived by his father, mother, and sister.

The cause of the death is under investigation.
